Neeraj Chopra speaks out on relationship with Arshad Nadeem amid rising Indo-Pak tensions

Indian javelin superstar Neeraj Chopra, a two-time Olympic medallist and reigning world champion, has addressed questions surrounding his relationship with Pakistani athlete Arshad Nadeem, amid renewed border tensions between the two nations. Speaking ahead of the Doha Diamond League, Chopra took the opportunity to set the record straight, emphasising mutual respect and professionalism within the global athletics community.

Chopra vs Nadeem: A Rivalry Built on Respect

Both Chopra and Nadeem are among the world’s elite javelin throwers and have captured global attention with their performances on the biggest stages. While Chopra claimed gold at the Tokyo Olympics in 2021, Nadeem became the first Pakistani athlete to win a World Championship medal in javelin. Their anticipated face-off at the Paris Olympics last year drew widespread interest.

Despite media narratives often portraying them as fierce rivals, Chopra made it clear that their relationship is grounded more in courtesy than deep friendship.

“Not a Strong Bond, But Mutual Respect”

Responding to a reporter’s question about whether recent events — including the Pahalgam terrorist attack in April — would impact his interactions with Nadeem, Chopra clarified:

“First of all, I really want to clear that I don't have a very strong relationship [with him]. I mean, we do talk… I have good friends in the athletics community all around the world. But if somebody talks to me respectfully, I always like to talk to him respectfully.”

He added that while the javelin community is small and close-knit, each athlete competes for their nation with the same level of passion and determination.

Sports Beyond Borders

Chopra also dismissed any notion that political tensions between India and Pakistan would sour professional relationships on the field.

“Because of this [recent border tension], I don't think so… it will not be like something before. If somebody gives me respect, I will give him the same.”

His balanced, thoughtful response reflects a growing trend in global sport, where athletes often rise above political friction to foster camaraderie and mutual respect.

As Chopra prepares to compete in the Doha Diamond League, his focus remains firmly on performance, unity through sport, and upholding the values of dignity and mutual respect on the world stage.
