IPL 2025 RCB vs KKR: Covers on at Eden Gardens
The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2025 season is set to begin with a blockbuster clash between defending champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) and Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) at Eden Gardens, Kolkata, on Saturday, March 22.
However, heavy rain and thunderstorms threaten to derail both the highly anticipated match and the grand opening ceremony planned ahead of it.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Kolkata and surrounding regions, forecasting thunderstorms, lightning, and strong winds.

On Friday, both KKR and RCB had to cut their practice sessions short due to rain. The weather conditions are expected to persist through Saturday, with rain chances increasing as the evening progresses.

According to weather reports, precipitation probability hovers around 48% at the scheduled match start time of 7:30 pm, rising to 70% later in the night. Ground staff at Eden Gardens have already covered the playing area, but there remains significant uncertainty over the match proceedings.
If the rain disrupts play, match officials will wait for one hour beyond the scheduled start before reducing the number of overs. A minimum of five overs per side is required to constitute a match. If the rain does not allow even a five-over game, the match will be abandoned, and both teams will share one point each.
Unlike the playoffs and the final, the IPL group stage matches do not have a reserve day. Therefore, if no play is possible, KKR and RCB will begin their campaigns with a point apiece, potentially impacting the league standings later.
This match holds special significance as both teams enter the season with new captains—Rajat Patidar leading RCB and Ajinkya Rahane at the helm for KKR. A washout would be an underwhelming start for the defending champions and RCB, a franchise still chasing its maiden IPL title.
The opening ceremony, featuring performances by Shreya Ghoshal, Karan Aujla, and Disha Patani, is also at risk. Fans at Eden Gardens and millions watching at home will be hoping for the rain to clear so that IPL 2025 can begin with a full contest rather than a damp squib.
