IPL 2025: Prithvi Shaw remains unsold, Delhi Capitals reveal reason

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Prithvi Shaw remained unsold in the IPL 2025 auction held in Jeddah, marking a low point in his career. Delhi Capitals' Parth Jindal commented that this was a needed jolt.

Several fans were stunned when aggressive opener Prithvi Shaw remained unsold in the recent IPL 2025 auction.

Once compared with great cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar, Brian Lara and Virender Sehwag, things gradually began to fall apart for the talented cricketer.

Shaw’s career hit a new low when he was ignored by all the 10 IPL franchises during the recently-concluded mega auction in Jeddah. Presented at the mega auction in Jeddah for a base price of INR 75 lakh, Shaw found no bidders.

Shaw’s fall was evident last year when he disappointed Delhi Capitals with his inconsistent shows when the team needed him the most with inspiring performances.

Shaw was acquired by Delhi Capitals in 2018 and the franchise also retained him ahead of the mega auction in 2022 for INR 7.5 crore. However, Shaw was dropped from the playing XI due to poor show in 2024. Subsequently, he was released by the franchise last month ahead of the 2025 auction.

Reflecting on the incident that Shaw was not picked by any franchise, Delhi Capitals co-owner Parth Jindal did not mince words by saying that Shaw needed this ‘jolt’.

“Shaw grew up listening to experts and veteran cricketers comparing him with legendary cricketers like Sachin, and he gained early success as well, but he failed to live up to the expectations. He is a great kid, but is misunderstood in many ways. I think, one in a while, we all need a jolt, and need to be shaken up from our slump,” said Jindal.

“When all your life you grow up hearing that you are a special player, the most talented, and is the only other batsman in the world other than Sachin and Kohli to own an MRF bat, that tells you a lot. Somebody called him Lara, somebody called him Sachin, or the next big thing and grew up in that environment. Everyone from Mumbai cricket was talking about him. Mumbai has given us Sunil Gavaskar and Sachin Tendulkar, and now they were talking about him. So, this is that one jolt Prithvi needed. Till now he was on a fat IPL contract and playing across formats for Mumbai and was starting for Delhi,” he added.
