MS Dhoni

Veteran wicketkeeper-batsman Mahendra Singh Dhoni will return as captain of the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) in the ongoing IPL 2025 after Ruturaj Gaikwad sustained an elbow fracture. Head coach Stephen Fleming confirmed the news ahead of CSK's match against Kolkata Knight Riders on Friday.

Gaikwad's Injury Setback

The injury occurred while Gaikwad was playing in Guwahati, after facing a delivery from Tarun Deshpande. Despite experiencing pain, Gaikwad continued to bat until an MRI revealed the full extent of his injury. Fleming expressed disappointment over the loss of Gaikwad's talent in the remainder of the tournament but commended his perseverance.

Dhoni's Return to Captaincy

This marks the third occasion that Dhoni has taken on the role of captain temporarily, excluding the period when CSK returned after a two-year suspension. Although concerns about Dhoni’s fitness exist, his commitment to the team remains unwavering. "He didn't hesitate to help us navigate through this challenging time," Fleming stated.

Team Adjustments & Strategy

In response to Gaikwad's absence, CSK may look to promote Rahul Tripathi to bat at number three, while opening slots could be filled by Devon Conway and Rachin Ravindra. Additionally, CSK has the option to bring in Andre Siddharth or Vansh Bedi to bolster the lineup. For international firepower, Lhuan-dre Pretorius or Dewald Brevis might be considered as replacements.
