MS Dhoni
For a team used to dominating the Indian Premier League, the 2025 campaign has been nothing short of a nightmare for Chennai Super Kings. With just six points from 12 matches and an early elimination from the playoff race, CSK's golden aura took a hit. But amidst the gloom, MS Dhoni has offered a ray of clarity; the rebuilding has already begun.
Speaking ahead of CSK’s clash against Rajasthan Royals in Delhi on May 20, Dhoni revealed that the franchise is already focused on preparing for next season. The focus now? Giving players a chance to express themselves, especially with the bat.
“We’ve already started that process,” said Dhoni during the toss. “In batting, we’ve encouraged our players to express themselves, which we’ve done well in recent games.”
CSK, often known for a steady and measured approach, threw caution to the wind against KKR — and it worked. The change in attitude was no coincidence, but a deliberate shift as the franchise starts laying the groundwork for 2026.
Dhoni stressed the importance of finding the right combination and giving fringe players opportunities to prove themselves — a chance to "seal their spot" ahead of the next auction.
“We’re looking to identify that one player to target in the auction. Getting answers is crucial when you’re out of the tournament,” he explained.
With no playoff pressure, CSK is using the remaining games to test combinations and promote a fearless brand of cricket.
“When you’re under pressure, you search for options. Now, it’s about expressing yourself and playing good cricketing shots — that’s how you get results,” Dhoni concluded.
CSK may be down this season, but under Dhoni’s watchful eyes, the journey to resurgence has already begun.
