IPL 2025: Can RCB finally end 10-Year hoodoo against KKR at Chinnaswamy?

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

RCB lead IPL 2025 with 16 points as they face their M. Chinnaswamy nemesis KKR on May 17. Kohli and Hazlewood to play key roles, aiming to break decade-long jinx.

Ajinkya Rahane and Rajat Patidar

As the IPL 2025 season enters its decisive phase, Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stand tall at the top of the points table with 16 points and a team brimming with confidence. With stars like Virat Kohli, Josh Hazlewood, Rajat Patidar, and Krunal Pandya firing on all cylinders, RCB are being tipped by many as genuine contenders for their maiden IPL title.

However, there’s one challenge that continues to haunt the Bengaluru-based franchise, a decade-long losing streak against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. RCB have not managed to defeat KKR at their home ground since 2015, adding an extra layer of drama and anticipation to the clash scheduled for 17 May.

Key Players to Watch

Josh Hazlewood’s return to the side has added much-needed firepower to RCB’s pace attack. Currently the Purple Cap holder with 18 wickets, Hazlewood will be instrumental in countering KKR’s batting line-up.

Virat Kohli, in sublime touch this season, remains the heartbeat of RCB’s batting order. The former India captain will be eager to maintain his rich vein of form and finally steer his team past their Kolkata jinx.

On the other side, KKR, though struggling this season, have shown flashes of brilliance. After a disheartening defeat to Chennai Super Kings at Eden Gardens, the defending champions have been knocked out of playoff contention. However, with 11 points to their name, they will be keen to play party poopers and extend their winning streak against RCB to six matches.

Varun Chakraborty and Sunil Narine will be key for KKR in conditions at Chinnaswamy, which has some turn for the spinners. Ajinkya Rahane will also be key for KKR, who have looked in good touch for the defending champions.

The average score at this ground is around 170, M. Chinnaswamy Stadium, which was an belter for the batsmen and a high-scoring ground, now is favouring the bowlers, particularly the spinners, who might extract some turn from the pitch.

Weather Conditions

Fans may need to keep their fingers crossed, as weather forecasts for Bengaluru on match day indicate a strong chance of rain. With gloomy skies expected, the match could be at risk of interruptions or even a washout, adding another element of unpredictability.

A Clash Beyond the Numbers

For RCB, this isn’t just another match; it’s an opportunity to exorcise long-standing demons. For KKR, it’s a chance to walk away with pride, derailing the momentum of this season’s frontrunners. Come May 17, all eyes will be on the Chinnaswamy Stadium to see whether RCB can finally rewrite history.
