Experienced pacer Jasprit Bumrah has been appointed as the skipper of the Indian team for the fifth Test against England in Edgbaston starting today. After being named as the captain, Bumrah revealed that he received ‘tips and tricks’ on captaincy from his excited mother.

Bumrah’s wife Sanjana Ganesan said that her husband was eager and proud after being named captain, but not to the same degree as his mother Daljit.

“She is pretty excited. She always likes to see him do well because he loves the sport and she’s literally seen the entire journey Jasprit has gone through to get to where he is now. She was ecstatic when she found out Jasprit to be appointed as the captain of the team,” ICC quoted Sanjana as saying.

“Daljit had tons of tips and tricks, even though she has never played cricket herself! Like a mother does, she told him, ‘This should be how you think, and this should be what you do’. It was very nice to see, and she was very happy and proud of him,” Sanjana added.

The 28-year-old pacer was named skipper of the team after Rohit Sharma tested positive for Covid-19 last week during a warm-up game against Leicestershire.

“Jasprit hasn’t had it all in one impact, because it (the confirmation of the news) has been a pretty tricky. In the sense that we had to wait for a result from Rohit to find out whether or not Jasprit will be leading the side,” said Sanjana.
