Ind-WI Test Series
The West Indies are ready to roar. With a historic two-Test series against India looming, head coach Darren Sammy has declared that his team will not be intimidated by Shubman Gill’s men. Instead, they’re drawing inspiration from New Zealand’s stunning 3-0 whitewash of India, achieved last year on Indian soil.
West Indies haven’t beaten India in Tests since 2002, and their last win in India came way back in 1983-84. But Sammy believes history shouldn’t dictate the present.
“New Zealand went there and did incredibly well, and we should take inspiration from that,” Sammy said. “We’ll plan and drill hard in the lead-up. We’re not going down there thinking, ‘oh, it’s India.’ We’re going with the mindset to win.”
The series comes at a transitional moment for India. After New Zealand’s landmark win, stalwarts like Virat Kohli, Ravichandran Ashwin, and Rohit Sharma have retired, paving the way for Shubman Gill to take charge. Sammy sees this as a fresh opportunity for his team to break India’s long dominance.
While spin has traditionally been the key to success in India, Sammy is banking on the West Indies’ diverse pace attack to make the difference.
“We’ve got four seamers with different varieties, and that six-to-eight-metre length works everywhere,” he explained. “We believe our fast-bowling department can challenge India in any conditions.”
With preparation camps planned and belief running high, Sammy’s men are determined to script history. The message is clear: West Indies are no longer scared of India, they’re ready to fight, and this time, to win.
