Ind Vs Eng tests: Former cricketing great props Gill-led team India to fight back at Edgbaston

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Former India head coach Ravi Shastri urges the Indian cricket team, led by Shubman Gill, to counterattack in the ongoing five-match Test series against England after a narrow loss in the first Test. He emphasizes mental resilience and strategic adjustments for the upcoming Edgbaston clash.

Shubman Gill

After a dramatic loss in the first Test against England, former India head coach Ravi Shastri has issued a strong call to action for the Indian side. Speaking to The ICC Review, Shastri urged the team — now led by Shubman Gill — to “throw the counterpunch immediately” if they hope to stay alive in the high-stakes five-match series for the Anderson-Tendulkar Trophy.

Lessons from Headingley, Bounce Back Fast

India dominated much of the first Test but fell short on the final day, losing by five wickets. England’s gritty chase highlighted India’s missed chances and lack of aggression in key moments.

“It’ll need a lot of character to bounce back. When you’ve controlled most of the game and still lose, the mental reset has to be sharp,” Shastri said while emphasizing the urgency ahead of the Edgbaston clash.

Bumrah’s Role and Team Composition Uncertain

With Jasprit Bumrah’s workload under management, uncertainty looms over whether the star pacer will feature in the second Test. India is also debating the inclusion of a second spinner to support Ravindra Jadeja on what could be a turning track.
“Whether Bumrah plays or not, it’s crucial. This Test is vital. It’s not the end, it’s a long series. One match at a time,” said Shastri.

Captain Gill's Big Test

Reflecting on Shubman Gill’s debut as captain, Shastri noted the young leader may have appeared reactive but expects a sharper, more proactive approach moving forward.

“He’ll have learned a lot. The fielders and bowlers now must back him with clear roles and strong execution,” he concluded.

With the second Test on the horizon, Shastri’s message is clear — fight back, and fight back now.
