India
In cricketing parlance, not all headaches are unwelcome. But for India’s team management ahead of the second Test against England at Edgbaston, the throbbing is very real and very unwelcome.
After an heartbreaking defeat at Headingley, India are grappling with difficult questions around team balance, player workload, and tactical clarity. With England playing with a depleted attack in the first Test and still emerging dominant, the pressure is firmly on the visitors to make a comeback.
Despite the loss, India’s batting showed promise, crossing the 350-run mark in both innings. The top and the middle order are expected to retain their places, although there’s chatter about Karun Nair moving up to No.3 at the expense of Sai Sudharsan. While the latter didn’t look settled, such a move might appear severe given Sudharsan’s potential.
A possible swap in the all-rounder slot is on the cards. Shardul Thakur’s limited involvement in net sessions suggests Nitish Kumar Reddy could step in, offering more batting solidity alongside acceptable bowling returns. The bigger debate surrounds Jasprit Bumrah. With India admitting he will play only three Tests, his absence creates a major void.
Enter Kuldeep Yadav. With India's assistant coach Ryan Ten Doeschate hinting of a two-spinner plan, he could be drafted in to bolster the attack, especially if India avoid the ultra-defensive choice of Washington Sundar. Kuldeep's ability to turn games on any surface may just tip the scales.
