Ind vs Aus: Should captain Rohit Sharma open for India in 2nd Test?

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul's 201-run stand secures victory in Perth. Rohit Sharma's return prompts debate on his batting slot for the pink-ball Test, with Harbhajan Singh suggesting a middle-order role.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and KL Rahul batted brilliantly and shared a 201-run opening stand in the second innings of the first Test in Perth to help India register a thumping victory against formidable Australia in their own soil.

However, India’s regular captain and opener Rohit Sharma will make a comeback to the team during the second Test.

Under the circumstance, fans are intrigued by the question that where will Rohit bat in the all-important pink-ball Test. Will he bat in his regular opening slot or in the middle-order position?

In response, former India off-spinner turned cricket expert Harbhajan Singh is of the opinion that the aggressive batter should move back to the middle order for the pink-ball Test instead as an opener.

According to Bhajji (as Harbhajan is popularly known among his fans), Rohit’s flexibility will be in India's best interest.

“I don’t see Rohit coming in at number five or six. Either Rohit will open with Yashasvi Jaiswal, with KL Rahul coming in at number three, or he will bat no later than number three,” said Harbhajan during an interaction.

“Number six for Rohit wouldn’t be in best interest of the team. Your top four in batting order should be the four pillars and someone like Rohit at the top would only add greater fillip,” he added.

Notably, Rohit has struggled as a batsman in the opener in recent times and as a result India have suffered a lot in its batting.

Rohit has played 37 Tests as an opener and scored 2,685 runs at an average of 44.01 with nine centuries and a top score of 212.
