ICC T20 World Cup
With the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 just months away, concerns are mounting over India’s preparation. Former chief selector Kris Srikkanth has openly questioned the team’s strategy, raising doubts about squad selections, the batting order, and overall readiness.
While India may look strong for the upcoming Asia Cup, Srikkanth believes this approach won’t be enough to bring home the coveted World Cup trophy.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, Srikkanth didn’t mince words.
“We might win the Asia Cup with this team, but there is no chance of winning the T20 World Cup with this bunch. Is this the preparation for the T20 World Cup, which is hardly six months away?”
One major talking point is the return of Shubman Gill as vice-captain, replacing Axar Patel, who held the role during the England series earlier this year. Gill, who last played a T20I in July 2024, now steps in as deputy to Suryakumar Yadav. Srikkanth expressed disappointment over Axar’s removal, calling it an unnecessary shuffle.
Srikkanth also criticized the inclusion of Rinku Singh, Shivam Dube, and Harshit Rana, highlighting their inconsistent IPL 2025 performances. While Rinku managed just 206 runs in 13 matches, Harshit was preferred over Purple Cap winner Prasidh Krishna, a move Srikkanth found baffling.
“Selections seem to be based on past performances rather than recent form,” he noted.
Another pressing issue for Srikkanth is the uncertain No. 5 slot. He argued that Yashasvi Jaiswal, with strong international and IPL performances, should have been picked over Dube.
India will kick off their campaign against the UAE on September 10, followed by a high-voltage clash against Pakistan on September 14.
