How GST Will Impact IPL; How Much Will Tickets Cost

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

The Ministry of Finance, in a notification issued on Wednesday, said admission to “casinos, race clubs or sporting events like the IPL” would now attract the higher tax slab, with Input Tax Credit (ITC) available.

IPL tickets

Indian Premier League (IPL) fans will have to dig deeper into their pockets next season, with the government raising the Goods and Services Tax (GST) on match tickets from 28% to 40%. The Ministry of Finance, in a notification issued on Wednesday, said admission to “casinos, race clubs or sporting events like the IPL” would now attract the higher tax slab, with Input Tax Credit (ITC) available.

Steep Rise in Ticket Prices

The hike means an IPL ticket with a base price of Rs 500, which earlier cost Rs 640 after 28% GST, will now be priced at Rs 700 during the 2026 season. The change comes after IPL tickets were reclassified under the ‘Luxury Goods’ category.

Different Rates for International Games

Interestingly, India’s international matches will not be affected by this new slab. Tickets for other sporting events, including recognised cricket internationals, will attract 18% GST if priced above Rs 500. Tickets below Rs 500 remain exempt.

The government clarified: “Admission to other sporting events where the ticket price is not more than Rs 500 continues to be exempt, and if the ticket price is more than Rs 500, it continues to be taxed at 18%.”

Impact on Franchises and Fans

While fans will certainly feel the pinch, the impact on IPL franchises may not be significant. Ticket revenues are among the smallest contributors to their earnings, with sponsorships and broadcast deals driving the bulk of profits.

Ticket pricing, moreover, is managed individually by each franchise at their home grounds, and not by the BCCI.

With GST rates soaring, fans planning to experience the electrifying stadium atmosphere next IPL season will need to brace themselves for higher costs.
