Arshdeep Singh
As the cricketing world evolves, every generation witnesses the rise of a new hero—one who defies odds, silences critics, and carves a niche for themselves. For Indian cricket, that hero in recent years has been Arshdeep Singh, a fearless left-arm pacer whose journey from Punjab’s cricketing heartland to donning the blue jersey has been nothing short of phenomenal. On his birthday, we celebrate not just the passing of another year but the incredible strides he has made in the game.
Born on February 5, 1999, in Guna, Madhya Pradesh, and raised in Punjab, Arshdeep’s cricketing story began in the small town of Kharar. A boy with big dreams and a relentless work ethic, he quickly rose through the ranks, catching the attention of selectors with his raw pace and accuracy. His breakthrough came in 2018 when he was selected for India’s U-19 World Cup-winning squad, a team that showcased some of the finest young talents in world cricket.
However, it was in the IPL that Arshdeep truly made his mark. Representing Punjab Kings, he emerged as one of the best death-over specialists in the league. His ability to bowl pinpoint yorkers and maintain composure under pressure earned him widespread recognition. In the 2021 IPL season, he claimed 18 wickets in 12 matches, cementing his place as Punjab’s go-to bowler in crunch situations.
His performances in the IPL paved the way for his international debut in July 2022, when he played his first T20I for India against England. He instantly impressed the selectors with his controlled swing and variations. But his defining moment came in the 2022 T20 World Cup, where he delivered outstanding spells against top teams. His opening spell against Pakistan, where he dismissed Babar Azam for a golden duck, remains etched in fans' memories. Arshdeep finished the tournament as India’s highest wicket-taker (10 wickets in six matches), proving his mettle on the grandest stage.
In the T20 World Cup in 2024, Arshdeep showcased his prowess as India’s premium bowler along with Jasprit Bumrah. Arshdeep’s Death bowling skills were highly praised by critics. He was the joint leading wicket-taker with 17 wickets along with Afghanistan’s Fazalhaq Farooqi. Arshdeep played a crucial role during the final where India lifted the ICC T20 World Cup after 17 years by beating South Africa in Barbados.
