Former Indian star drops bombshell on how KKR treated Shreyas Iyer

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Shreyas Iyer's leadership has guided Punjab Kings to a historic IPL season. Despite feeling undervalued at KKR, Iyer has become the architect of PBKS's success, praised by Ricky Ponting and Robin Uthappa.

Punjab Kings Skipper Shreyas Iyer

The Punjab Kings are enjoying one of their finest campaigns in IPL history. With a thumping win over Mumbai Indians, the Preity Zinta-owned franchise secured a top-two finish in the points table, marking their best performance since 2014. While the spotlight has rightfully fallen on team efforts, one man has stood out for his cool-headed strategy and timely performances: captain Shreyas Iyer.

Iyer: From Underdog to Architect of Success

Former India cricketer Robin Uthappa has now added a fascinating layer to Iyer’s narrative. Speaking on JioHotstar, Uthappa revealed that Iyer often felt undervalued during his time with Kolkata Knight Riders, despite leading them to an IPL title in 2024.

“Shreyas has always been an exceptional captain,” Uthappa said.

“You always sensed that he felt underappreciated at KKR despite adding value there. He moved to a franchise where not much had been achieved historically and then went on to win it for them. That says a lot about his leadership and belief.”

In a shock move post-title win, KKR released Iyer ahead of the 2025 mega auction, opening the door for PBKS to swoop in with a record-breaking Rs 26.75 crore deal—a move that now looks like a masterstroke.

Leadership Beyond the Numbers

In the high-pressure win over Mumbai Indians, Iyer may have scored a modest 26 off 16 balls, but his real impact was evident in his proactive captaincy. His tactical awareness, calm demeanour, and ability to rally his players have turned PBKS from perennial underachievers to serious title contenders.

Ponting’s Praise: “A Quality Human Being”
Adding to the chorus of admiration, PBKS head coach Ricky Ponting praised Iyer’s character and leadership, saying:

“He’s a quality person, and when you're trying to change culture and make a difference, that's what you need.”

Ponting’s comments underline Iyer’s deeper influence, not just on the pitch, but in the dressing room too.

Eyes on the Prize

Punjab now await the result of the RCB vs LSG clash on May 27 to find out whether they'll face Royal Challengers Bengaluru or Gujarat Titans in Qualifier 1. With two shots at reaching the final, Iyer’s tactical acumen will be more crucial than ever.

A Captain Reborn

From feeling overlooked at KKR to becoming the heart of Punjab Kings’ resurgence, Shreyas Iyer’s IPL journey is a testament to resilience, self-belief, and quiet leadership. As Punjab chase their maiden IPL title, one thing is certain: they’re in safe hands.
