Shreyas Iyer
Shreyas Iyer has been one of the most consistent performers in the Indian Premier League, yet his omission from India’s Asia Cup 2025 squad has left many scratching their heads.
The stylish batsman, who led Punjab Kings to their second final earlier this year after guiding Kolkata Knight Riders to the title in 2024, is once again on the sidelines, a decision that has sparked widespread debate.
Iyer’s leadership and batting form have been exemplary. While Punjab Kings fell short in the final, his inspiring captaincy and match-winning contributions earned him plaudits from fans and experts alike. Despite this, the 30-year-old finds himself excluded not only from the main squad but also from the reserves for the Asia Cup.
Former India assistant coach Abhishek Nayar voiced his disappointment on Star Sports, questioning how Iyer could be overlooked despite his impressive credentials.
“I wanted to ask that question, how is he not even in the reserves if he’s such a strong contender?” Nayar remarked. He went on to hint that personal preferences might have influenced the decision, suggesting, “Maybe Shreyas Iyer is not liked as much as someone else.”
Chief selector Ajit Agarkar addressed the concerns, stressing there was “no fault” on Iyer’s part. “We can only pick 15, and at the moment, he might have to wait for his chance,” he explained.
Having last represented India in T20Is in December 2023 with a half-century against Australia, Iyer continues to wait for a recall. With the ICC T20 World Cup looming in February 2026, the selectors’ treatment of Iyer could prove to be one of the most intriguing talking points in Indian cricket over the coming months.
