Speculation is rife among the fans and the experts that Team India ODI captain Rohit Sharma will announce his retirement from international cricket after the end of the ongoing ICC Champions Trophy 2025.

However, former Team India captain  Sourav Ganguly backed  Rohit to continue until the next ICC tournament.

In a recent interview, Ganguly dismissed rumours about Rohit's retirement, suggesting that the final decision rests with chief selector Ajit Agarkar.

"Why is there speculation about Rohit Sharma’s retirement? He won the World Cup just a few months ago. I have no idea what the selectors are thinking, but Rohit is in great form. India is a stronger side than New Zealand. They reached the 2023 World Cup final, won the 2024 T20 World Cup, and remain unbeaten in this Champions Trophy. The same squad will take the field," said Ganguly.

Former southpaw backs India

The former southpaw also  backed India being the favourites against New Zealand, given their unbeaten run in the tournament.

"India are the favourites. They are in excellent form, and every player is performing well. With Virat Kohli, Shubman Gill, Shreyas Iyer, Rohit Sharma, and KL Rahul all in top shape, it should be a thrilling contest. India’s bowling attack is also strong. In the end, anything can happen," said Ganguly.

Notably, if India managed to beat New Zealand in the final of the Champions Trophy, Rohit will become only the second captain after MS Dhoni to win multiple ICC titles.
