Cricket Returns to the Olympics after 128 years: Six teams to compete in 2028 LA Games

PUBLISHED: LAST UPDATE:

Cricket returns to the Olympics in 2028 after 128 years. Six teams each in men's and women's T20 will compete. Jay Shah leads ICC's future strategy.

LA Olympics 2028

Cricket will make a highly anticipated return to the Olympic Games in 2028, marking its first appearance in 128 years. The sport, which has been a global sensation, will feature six teams in both the men’s and women’s T20 events at the Los Angeles Olympics.

A total of 90 players, which will include 45 men and 45 women, will compete in this fast-paced, short-format version of the game.

New Sports Line-Up for LA 2028

The Los Angeles Olympics will introduce five new sports, with cricket being one of the headliners. Alongside cricket, sports like squash, flag football, baseball/softball, and lacrosse will make their Olympic debut. The inclusion of these sports is part of a broader strategy to diversify the Olympic Games and appeal to younger audiences.

Qualification Criteria Still to Be Finalized

While cricket’s return is confirmed, the qualification criteria are still under development. T20 cricket is played by nearly 100 nations, so the road to qualification promises to be competitive and exciting. As hosts, the USA may receive a direct entry into the tournament, but the final qualification process remains to be seen.

Long-Term Strategy for Cricket

The decision to include cricket was made after a campaign led by the International Cricket Council (ICC), which began in August 2021. Jay Shah, ICC Chairman, has already started strategizing to keep cricket in future Olympic Games, including Brisbane 2032.

Cricket’s return in 2028 is expected to bring a fresh excitement to the global sports stage.
