The announcement of the Indian squad for the upcoming Champions Trophy has sparked widespread discussion, particularly regarding the selection of Shubman Gill as the Vice Captain. This decision has drawn criticism from fans and former players alike, with Gautam Gambhir expressing his support for Hardik Pandya to assume the vice-captaincy role instead.

Gambhir's preference for Pandya stems from the all-rounder's successful track record, especially after leading the Gujarat Titans to victory in the IPL. Pandya's experience as a vice-captain during India's triumphant ICC T20 World Cup campaign in the West Indies further solidifies his credentials for leadership.

The rift between Gambhir's opinions and the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) decisions has become a focal point for cricket enthusiasts on social media, raising questions about the decision-making process within the team management. Fans have expressed disappointment over the selection, arguing that Gill's appointment may not be in the best interest of the team's dynamic and performance.

In addition to the vice-captaincy debate, there are also contrasting views on the wicketkeeper-batter selection. Gambhir advocated for Sanju Samson to be included in the Champions Trophy squad, highlighting his impressive performance as the first batter globally to score three T20I centuries in a calendar year in 2024. In contrast, Captain Rohit Sharma and chief selector Ajay Agarkar favoured Rishabh Pant for the role, underscoring the ongoing struggle between performance and established reputations within the team.

Samson's last ODI appearance against South Africa in Paarl on December 2023, where he scored an impressive 108 runs as a No. 3 batter, adds further weight to Gambhir's argument for his inclusion.

Meanwhile, cricket fans have accused BCCI and Rohit Sharma of favouring a few players and not putting the interest of the Team first, with most stating that the board should listen to the coach too when the players are going to represent the country and not any IPL team.
