Shubman Gill and Jasprit Bumrah
As Indian cricket turns the page on Rohit Sharma’s illustrious Test career, the search is on for the next leader to carry the torch in red-ball cricket. Rohit’s retirement on May 7 has not only left a void in India’s top order but also in the leadership group that steered the team through some of its most memorable wins. With a high-stakes five-Test series against England just weeks away, the conversation around India's next Test captain is heating up, and former opener Wasim Jaffer has thrown his weight behind an experienced yet unconventional candidate.
With Rohit stepping away from the format after 11 years, India faces the crucial task of appointing a new captain. His tenure was marked by tactical acumen and composure, making the transition all the more significant.
Former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has weighed in on the captaincy debate, stating that pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah should be the first-choice pick for Test captaincy—provided he’s willing to take up the role.
“I think Bumrah is an automatic captaincy choice, unless he doesn't want the responsibility. He should be the captain with Gill as VC – stepping in whenever Bumrah needs rest.”
Jaffer also stressed the importance of grooming Shubman Gill without burdening him with full-time leadership responsibilities right away.
Bumrah previously captained India in the rescheduled fifth Test against England at Edgbaston in 2022. While India lost that match, Bumrah redeemed himself by leading the team to a historic 295-run win against Australia in Perth in 2024—their biggest Test victory by runs down under.
He also led India in the final Test against Australia at the SCG earlier this year when Rohit opted out.
With Bumrah recently returning from a back injury, all eyes will be on the selectors as India prepares to face England in a five-match Test series starting June 20 at Headingley, Leeds.
Will Bumrah be handed the reins? Or will the baton go to the next-gen Gill? The countdown begins.
