‘Black Moon’ 2024: Know when and how to watch the rare celestial event in India
December 30 will see a rare ‘Black Moon’, a rare celestial event. The year 2024 will end with the rare celestial event—the 'black moon'. Skywatchers and stargazers across the world can witness the rare celestial event as it will grace the December skies.
The term ‘black moon’ refers to the second new moon in a single calendar month. While not officially recognized in astronomy, it has gained popularity among amateur astronomers and stargazers. As per reports, the ‘black moon’ will occur today i.e. December 30 as it promises a darker night sky, perfect for observing stars and planets.
What is Black Moon?
New moons happen when the sun and the moon share the same celestial longitude. One cannot see the moon during this phase from Earth because the illuminated side is facing away from us.
A black moon occurs when two new moons occur in one calendar month. This rare phenomenon mirrors the ‘Blue Moon’ which refers to a second full moon in a month.
Timing and Viewing Opportunities
According to the US Naval Observatory, the phenomenon will occur on December 30 at 5:27 PM ET (2227 GMT). In America, it will be visible on December 30, whereas Europe, Africa, and Asia can witness it on December 31, 2024. In India, the black moon can be observed at around 3:57 AM on December 31.
The darker night sky will offer stargazers an ideal setting to explore the night sky. The absence of moonlight creates darker conditions, enhancing views of galaxies, nebulae, and distant planets.
