Senior Congress leader Tara Prasad Bahinipati on Sunday sought strong action against Police Commissioner Saumendra Priyadarshi for excessive action against Chhattra Congress leaders during their protest in front of the State Assembly on Friday.

The police resorted to lathi charge on the student congress activists who were protesting demanding the ouster of Minister of State for Home Dibya Shankar Mishra for his alleged links with Gobinda Sahu, the prime accused in Mamita Meher murder case involvement in the lady teacher Mamita Meher’s murder case in Kalahandi.

While, the police have claimed that they were forced to resort to lathi charge as the activists hurled stones at them, Bahinipati challenged the Police Commissioner.

“I will quit politics if Police Commissioner provides evidence of Congress activists pelting stones at the police. Rather, police personnel hurled stones at Congress Bhawan,” said Bahinipati.

“The activists hurled tomatoes and eggs, but not stones. Will the Police Commissioner resign from service if their allegation will not be proved?” he asked.

The senior congress leader also demanded an investigation into the incident.

“The matter should be investigated either by a Magistrate or a High Court judge. We will ghearo Commissionerate Police office if no action is taken against the erring police officials,” said Bahinipati.

Notably, several Chhatra Congress activists suffered head injuries and several others have fractured their legs and hands after police chased and beat them using excess force. The police even chased the protestors and beat them mercilessly by breaking into the Congress Bhavan.
