Opposition BJP and Congress slammed the Odisha government on Thursday over the tragic death of a youth who had attempted suicide by slitting his wrist and consuming poison in front of the Odisha Assembly over alleged neglect in treatment at the SCB Medical College in Cuttack.

The deceased, identified as Dusmanta Das, a native of Kujang area in Jagatsinghpur district, had taken the extreme step Wednesday when the monsoon session of the State legislature was in progress.

Hitting out at the government for the massive tragedy, Odisha BJP raised a question mark and the State government’s sincerity over the implementation of Biju Krushak Kalyan Yojana (BKKY) in Odisha.

As per reports, a seven member BJP team under the stewardship of senior leader Manmohan Samal is on its way to meet the devastated family members of the deceased at Pankapal village under Kujang block in Jagatsinghpur district.

“Many tragic incidents are occurring in the State during the rule of the BJD-led government. Our party has decided to send the team under my leadership to meet the family of the deceased,” said Samal.

“On behalf of the party, we will extend all possible help and convey our empathy with the bereaved family,” said Samal.

Meanwhile, the State Congress has demanded a thorough probe into the incident.

“The deceased youth had alleged medical negligence at SCB Medical, Cuttack. He was allegedly denied coverage under the Biju Krushak Kalyan Yojana for treatment which resulted in his death. The State government is fully responsible for it. We demand a thorough probe into the incident,” said Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) President Niranjan Patnaik.
