While the model code of conduct (MCC) is in force in Odisha for the upcoming Panchayat elections in the State, a purported video of violation of the rules has made its way into social media, inviting sharp reactions from various quarters.

In the viral video that is doing the rounds on social media, a political meeting was seen being organised on the premises of Tarini Mahavidyalaya (college) at Mahakalpada in Kendrapara district. Hundreds of people were seen present in the meeting.

It has been alleged that the principal of the college and sub-divisional police officer (SDPO) of Salipur, Prasanta Majhi were in attendance at the meeting.

However, Majhi claimed that it was a family function and denied any violation of the model code of conduct.

"I do not know about the viral video. What I know is a marriage anniversary of the principal of the college was organised and members of his family, my family and others were present. As per my knowledge, there was no political speech or propaganda during the function," Majhi told OTV over phone.

"The function was organised before the enforcement of the Covid restrictions. It was a marriage anniversary party which my family had attended," he added.

The reaction of the college principal over the allegations could not be obtained.

The Panchayat polls will be held in Odisha in five phases from February 16 to 24.
