The State Election Commission (SEC), Odisha, has announced revision in the limit of expenditure of candidates contesting for the posts of councillors and corporator, chairperson and mayor in the forthcoming civic body polls in the State.  

In a notification, the SEC said, the limit on expenditure that may be incurred by a candidate either by himself or through any person authorised by him for election as Councillor/Corporator/Chairperson/Mayor to a NAC/ Municipality/ Municipal Corporation has been revised in exercise of the powers conferred under Sub-Section (1) of Section 17-A of the Odisha Municipal Act, 1950 and Section-82 of Odisha Municipal Corporation Act, 2003 and after consultation with the State government.

As per the revised expenditure limits, candidate contesting for Councillor or Corporator post in NACs/Municipalities having a population up to 50,000 can make a maximum expenditure of Rs 50,000 while the amount is fixed at Rs 2 for chairperson or Mayor aspirant in the same area. 

Similarly, the expenses have been fixed at Rs 75,000 for Councillor or Corporator in municipalities having a population between 50,000 to 1,00,000 while the amount is Rs 1 lakh in case the population is above 1 lakh and Rs 2 lakh for municipal corporation. 

The poll expenses is fixed at Rs 3 lakh, Rs 5 lakh and Rs 12 lakh for Chairperson and Mayor in municipalities having population between 50,000 and 1 lakh, above 1 lakh and in Municipal Corporation respectively.
