Thick security cover will be in place across urban areas in the State during voting for 47 Municipalities, 59 NACs and 3 Municipal Corporations- Cuttack, Bhubaneswar and Berhampur- on March 24, said State Election Commissioner Aditya Prasad Padhi on Monday.

According to Padhi, a total of 195 platoons of police force will be deployed for the smooth conduct of the elections. Out of this, 30 platoons of force will be deployed for the elections in Bhubaneswar Municipal Corporation (BMC), 20 platoons in Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) and 10 platoons force for the Berhampur Municipal Corporation (BeMC).

Apart from this, a total of 309 mobile units will also be deployed for taking the required immediate action. Of the 309 units, 109 units will be specifically deployed in the three municipal corporations.

Around 40, 55,053 voters will exercise their franchise in the elections to the urban local bodies in 2989 booths for Municipality/NAC and 1384 booths in 3 municipal corporations.

“A total of 569 candidates are in fray for the Mayor/ Chairperson elections and 5842 candidates are contesting for corporator/councillor posts,” said Padhi.

Padhi informed that already candidates who had filed nomination for 3 Wards of Berhampur Municipal Corporation and 58 others Wards in municipalities and NAC, have won uncontested.

Similarly, no nomination has been filed for in the Pattamundai Municipality and one Ward each for Kamahyanagar and Purushottampur NACs. As these Wards fall under the reserve category, the State government will take appropriate steps to nominate persons for these Wards as per the provision, Padhi added.
