Law and Urban Development Minister Pratap Jena on Monday encountered public wrath while campaigning for his party candidate in Phulbani of Kandhamal district for the upcoming elections to the Urban Local Bodies (ULBs) on March 24.

Jena faced stiff opposition from residents in Phulbani Municipality while campaigning for BJD Chairman candidate and Councillor aspirant Rajendra Padhi from ward number 8 of the municipal segment.

As per sources, locals of the area were seemingly unhappy over government apathy and inaction by public representatives in addressing various problems pertaining to drinking water, drainage and basic amenities.

As a mark of protest, a large number of people gathered at Jena's campaign site and openly expressed their frustration over their sufferings. They gheraoed the minister and put forth their demands. Some protesters even vocalised that they would not vote for the BJD in the ensuing elections.

We have always been fooled by the local public representatives who come with rosy promises during campaigning but never fulfil them after getting the mandate of people. This time, we will not let that happen; said a protestor.

Meanwhile, Minister Jena downplayed the protest as public demand and assured to work for their quick resolution.

There is obviously some public angst as some leaders who were earlier elected by the people have not fulfilled the demands of people. This is not such a big issue but yes we will ensure that the problems are solved soon said Jena.
