The Odisha Legislative Assembly issued a notification on Friday, informing the vacancy that has occurred in the House due to the demise of Brajarajnagar MLA Kishore Kumar Mohanty. 

As per the rule, the Brajarajnagar Assembly constituency would go for by-election in the next six months. 

The Secretary to the Election Commission of India, the Chief Electoral Officer, Odisha; the Secretary Generals of Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha and the Secretary to Government of India, Ministry of Parliamentary Affairs have been informed about the death of the sitting MLA and the vacancy thus created. 

Notably, Mohanty had died following cardiac arrest on December 30 last year. He was 63. He was at a condolence meeting when he complained of sickness. Subsequently he was rushed to a private hospital in Jharsuguda where he breathed his last. 
The veteran leader was first elected as MLA in 1990 and subsequently elected twice as a legislator in Odisha Assembly from Jharsuguda constituency. He also won as an MLA from Brajarajnagar Assembly seat in 2019 general elections.

The leader’s mortal remains were consigned to flames at ‘Muktidham’ near Jhadeswar in Jharsuguda district on December 31. He was given a guard of honour by the district police. The departed leader’s only son Durgesh lit the fire of the pyre. 

Political leaders cutting across party lines, family members, relatives and followers had thronged his residence in Jharsuguda town to pay their homage. 

People in Jharsuguda and Belpahad had observed a spontaneous bandh to bid adieu to the leader.
