BJD candidate Damayanti Majhi was elected as the youngest Deputy Mayor of Cuttack Municipal Corporation (CMC) on Thursday.

Majhi was elected uncontested as she was the lone candidate for the post.

BJP and Congress Councillors reportedly boycotted CMC election opposing the election process stating that the rules set by the State government for the election were undemocratic.

In the recently concluded Urban Local Body (ULB) polls, the 21-year-old tribal girl, studying M. Com at Ravenshaw University, was elected as the youngest Corporator in CMC.

“I will continue my study and take up my new responsibility simultaneously. I will try my best to make all the schemes of the State government available for the beneficiaries,” said Majhi.

“I have joined politics to serve the people. Winning the election was a tough challenge for me as I had no previous experience. But voters of our ward supported me fully and elected me as their Corporator. I am grateful to them,” she said.

“I had never thought that I would be the Deputy Mayor of CMC. But with Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik’s blessings this has become possible,” said Majhi, adding that proper drainage system and providing proper drinking water facilities are the main problems for the denizens of Cuttack and she will try to solve them as soon as possible.
