The Congress party on Monday named Tarun Pandey as its candidate for the upcoming bypoll to Jharsuguda assembly constituency.

Pandey’s name has been approved by the All India Congress Committee (AICC) President Mallikarjun Kharge.

Pandey is the son of former MLA late Biren Pandey.

The Jharsuguda bypoll is scheduled for May 10.

“I am very happy on being nominated by the Congress party for the by-election. We will definitely try to win Jharsuguda seat,” asserted Pandey.

“I have been involved in politics since 2000. My father is no more and we will miss him in this election. However, we are prepared and will make all efforts to win it,” he said.

Speaking about the issues which he will try to solve if he wins the election, Pandey said, “Pollution, unemployment and law and order situation are some of the issues that Jharsuguda needs to address as soon as possible. I am sure we will make this opportunity count and win this election handsomely.”

The ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) has already announced Dipali Das, daughter of late Naba Kishore Das as its candidate. The BJP is yet to declare its candidate.

The voting for the Assembly Constituency will be held on May 10 and counting of votes will be done on May 13.

While submission of nominations for the bypoll will continue till April 20, scrutiny of the same will be held on April 21. Nominations for the by-election can be withdrawn till April 24.
