Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Saturday took potshots at the Biju Janata Dal (BJD)-led Odisha government over free PDS rice.

On the sidelines of a programme at Nilagiri in Balasore district, the Union Railway Minister asked people not to believe in misleading words.

“Modiji is giving you five kilograms of free rice per head per month. If yours is a five-member family, you are receiving 25 kilograms of rice a month. Don’t fall for any misleading words. A new era has started. In this era, whatever task Modiji takes up, he definitely finishes it. It is his thought,” he said.

The Union Minister’s statement came at a time when it is alleged that the ruling BJD posters are being used at PDS centres. The state unit of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) has been targeting the ruling BJD party for the same.

The root cause of this ongoing war of words between the BJP and the BJD lies in the fact that the central government is providing free rice to 3,26,00,000 beneficiaries under the Pradhan Mantri Garib Kalyan Yojana. The state government is distributing its free rice to the excluded 10 lakh beneficiaries. It means the state government is supplying free rice only to around three percent of the total beneficiaries.

No response has been received from the BJD.
