The Election Commission of India (ECI) issued a press note on Monday announcing the dates for by-polls in Brajarajnagar Assembly Constituency lying vacant since December 2021 after the death of MLA Kishore Mohanty.

The by-poll for the seat will be held on May 31, 2022.

As per the ESI press note, the gazette notification for the same will be published on May 4. Candidates can file nominations till May. Scrutiny of nomination will be held on May 12.

The last date to withdraw nomination has been set as May 17. The counting is on June 3.

Along with Brajarajnagar, Thrikkakara constituency in Kerala and Champawat in Uttarakhand will go into by-polls on the same day.

The ECI has decided to use Electronic Voting Machines (EVMs) in all the polling booths for the election.

Mohanty had died following cardiac arrest on December 30 last year. He was 63. He was at a condolence meeting when he complained of sickness. Subsequently he was rushed to a private hospital in Jharsuguda where he breathed his last.

The veteran leader was first elected as MLA in 1990 and subsequently elected twice as a legislator in Odisha Assembly from Jharsuguda constituency. He also won as an MLA from Brajarajnagar Assembly seat in 2019 general elections.
