A supporter of BJP was allegedly murdered in Berhampur area of Bhadrak district with the party attributing it to be a political killing ahead of the crucial three-tier panchayat elections in the State.

The alleged murder was reported from Zilla Parishad Zone No-28 of Bhadrak. The deceased, Subhasish Giri, was said to be a supporter of the BJP.

Alleging that Giri was beaten to death by the ruling BJD supported Sarpanch candidate Maheswar Palei and others, the saffron party on Tuesday moved the State Election Commission (SEC).

“Subhasish Giri was a supporter of our party. BJD’s sarpanch candidate Mahesar Palei and others have brutally beaten him to death. Under such a scenario, question arises as to how the elections can be conducted smoothly. Therefore, we called on the SEC in this regard,” said Bishnu Sethi, senior BJP leader and Deputy Leader of Opposition in the State Assembly.

However, the Sarpanch nominee and the BJD have not reacted over the allegations as yet.

On the other hand, the family members of the deceased along with local villagers blocked Bhadrak-Chandbali road for a long time demanding immediate arrest of the assailants. The protest was withdrawn following the intervention of the police.

Meanwhile, Bhadrak Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) has assured that appropriate action will be taken on the basis of the complaint.

“If FIR is lodged, whatever legal action is necessary will be taken,” said SDPO Pravash Chandra Pal.
