The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Friday cornered the ruling Biju Janata Dal (BJD) alleging that the Home Department has become dormant. The party demanded that the Chief Minister, who holds the Home portfolio, should relinquish charge of the department.

"While the functions of all the departments are being reviewed, who is reviewing the Home Department's performance. If reviewed, it would reveal the law and order situation in the State. The lawlessness in the State can well be gauged from the fact that the Chief Minister couldn’t even save his minister Naba Das," the party said.

Addressing a press conference, BJP spokesperson Manoj Mahapatra said, “In cybercrime, Odisha tops the list. The State also tops the list in road accidents, robberies & abduction of children.”

Referring to crime against women, Mahapatra said, “Odisha is number one in crime against women. Every two-and-a-half-hour, a woman is raped and murder is taking place.”

“The Home department has been lying dormant. As a result, the lawlessness in the State has increased. We demand he (the CM) should relinquish the charge of the Home department on his own and hand it over to someone who he thinks is capable to run the department smoothly,” he added.

No comments have been received from the concerned department or the ruling BJD.
