Nabarangpur: Tension ran high at Raigarh and Umerkote in the district after a scuffle broke out between the supporters of BJP and ruling BJD during the laying of foundation stone and inauguration of several welfare projects by Sports Minister Tusharkanti Behera in both the blocks on Saturday.

The brawl broke out after BJP supporters staged protest against the Minister who reportedly laid the foundation stones for some developmental projects without inviting the local MLA, Nityananda Gond.

BJP activists said that the minister carried out the stone laying ceremony in a unilateral manner in the absence of the local MLA”. How can a minister carry out a government programme without the knowledge of the MLA,” they asked.

According to reports, the BJP MLA from Umerkote Nityananda Gond was invited to the programme. However, he reached the venue late. By the time he showed up, the Minister had laid the stone in the presence of some BJD supporters and local leaders.

The act of the minister irked the Opposition party supporters who protested against the Minister by showing him black flag in Umerkote.

Later, the Minister proceeded to Raigharh to take part in some other government programmes where hundreds BJP workers staged protests by waving black flags. Meanwhile, the BJD supporters accompanying the Minister scuffled with the protesting Opposition members.

The Umerkote Police detained two BJP leaders of the locality while two others of the same party were taken into custody at Raigharh in connection with the incident.
