Whether you are a frequent traveller or not, you must have noticed some stations' names have the suffix ‘Road”. Ever wondered what this suggests?

Here is why.

Indian Railways is the 4th largest network in the world, only next to the USA, China and Russia. It is regarded as the lifeline of about 25 million people who are using it on a regular basis. Since so many people are counting on the Indian Railways, the Railway department is always taking one or the other steps to ensure people’s journeys are safe and comfortable.

As a part of this, the Railway department has categorised the stations. This goes a long way in making the journey convenient.

There are some stations whose names have a ‘Road’ suffix. In what case, a station gets the ‘Road’ suffix?

During your train journey, you must have come across such stations that have ‘Road’ suffix like ‘Khariar Road’, ‘Kapilas Road’, ‘Kendrapara Road’, ‘Khurda Road’ etc.

There are some stations that are located nearby a town or a village. The train line passes through the outskirts or nearby the town or the village. The line doesn’t pass through the said town or village. So, the station is also not in the town or the village.

In such case, the station name gets the suffix ‘Road’.
