At a time when the world is battling some pressing issues like global warming, climate change, and carbon emission, the excessive use of motor vehicles across the globe has bogged down the fight against climatic change.

However, there are some people who contribute their part to make the world a better place to live in.

Meet Prasant Behera of Nilagiri in Balasore, who has made a bicycle his companion for the last 60 years. It is not that Behera cannot afford a motorbike or car, but he preferred a bicycle to luxury as it contributes to a better climate and keeps him fit.

Surprisingly, Behera, who works as the principal of Baba Panchalingeswar Junior College, never rode a bike or travelled in a car in his lifetime. Rather, he has dedicated his car, which was gifted by his son, to the transportation of patients of his village to the hospital.

“I am inspired by my father. Despite being an officer then, he never rode a motor vehicle. Now I am following his footprints and doing my part for zero carbon emission,” said Behera.

Meanwhile, Behera’s wife has also adapted to his simple lifestyle and lauded her husband's efforts towards a better environment.
“No matter where and how far he travels, he always chooses his bicycle,” said Rajashree wife of Behera.

Rajendra Rout, sarpanch of the area and a former student of Behera, said, “I have seen sir (Behera) using a bicycle as a means of transportation since my childhood. We are really proud of the way he is contributing to a better environment. If everyone follows his footprint, then the world will definitely become a better place to live in.”
