Tension flared up on the premises of a gas depot at Jatani in Khordha on Monday after a contractual labourer died in an accident involving a gas cylinder-laden truck.

The identity of the deceased was not ascertained immediately.

According to sources, as the worker was on his way to drink water, the gas cylinder-laden truck ran over him, leaving him critically injured. He was immediately hospitalized, but doctors declared him dead.

Following the death, tension spread on the premises of the depot as co-workers staged protests demanding compensation. Police rushed to the spot and tried to pacify the agitating workers. The workers stopped their work and staged a demonstration demanding compensation for the bereaved family.

Local sarpanch Subashini Biswal said, "Due to the negligence of the manager of the depot, a worker died in the accident. There is no ambulance for medical emergencies.”

However, no reaction was received from the depot authorities.
