Woman tonsured, ostracised in kangaroo court trial; 4 arrested in Jharsuguda

In Routbahal village, Jharsuguda, Hema Kisan was allegedly ostracised and her head tonsured by a kangaroo court after she accidentally hit her husband, Mahendra Kisan, during a tussle. Laikera police arrested four persons, including the husband. The incident occurred on August 9.

In an inhumane act, a woman was allegedly ostracised and her head tonsured in a kangaroo court trial for reportedly resisting her husband during a tussle between them. The incident has been reported from Routbahal village under Laikera police limits in Jharsuguda.

As many as four persons including the husband of the victim have been arrested by the Laikera police in connection with the case.

According to sources, the victim Hema Kisan had a fight with her husband, identified as Mahendra Kisan, on August 9. During the tussle, the victim accidentally hit her husband while trying to resist him. 

Fumed over the incident, Kisan approached the kangaroo court which later ordered to tonsure and ostracise Hema. The court also reportedly directed the victim to give a mutton feast and slapped a fine of Rs 5000 and two country chickens.

Later, Hema and her son approached the police and lodged a complaint in this regard.

“I accidentally hit my husband during the tussle and he informed it to the community. The kangaroo court passed an order to ostracise and tonsure me. It also asked me to give a goat and two country chickens,” alleged Hema.

Dillip Kumar Behera, the officer in charge of Laikera police station, said, “During the investigation, it is found that the husband and other senior persons of the village are involved in the act. We have arrested four persons in connection with the case.”
