There is nothing in the world that can evaluate or compensate for the sacrifice and love of a woman for her child. But the incident of a woman allegedly selling her eight-month-old daughter for just Rs 800 has left many shocked in Mahulia village under Khunta police limits in Mayurbhanj district.

The woman, identified as Karami Murmu, decided to hand over her daughter to another woman in lieu of the meagre amount as she found it difficult to raise her second child. Her first child is a daughter.

“I had sold my child for Rs 800 due to my inability to raise her,” said Karami.

As per sources, Murmu decided to sell her second child because it was a girl without the knowledge of her husband Mushu. Mushu works in Tamil Nadu and was not present in the village when his wife sold the daughter for Rs 800. He came to know about the incident when he had come home recently.

On not finding his daughter, Mushu lodged a formal police complaint in connection with the incident.

“I don’t know why my wife sold the baby. When I came home, I found her missing. Though I searched her, I could not locate her. Later, I lodged a police complaint,” said Mushu.

Based on the complaint, police arrested two persons including the woman who had bought the child.

“I had purchased the child by paying Rs 800 a month back. When I learnt that the woman was selling the child, I decided to go ahead as I am issueless,” said Phulamani Marandi.
