Tension flared up at Salandi Hospital in Bhadrak after a woman died while a tumour was being operated out on Thursday night.

The deceased has been identified as Sanjulata Patra, wife of Basant Patra of Guhalipala village under Dhusuri police limits.

According to the family members, Sanjulata had a tumour. The family members admitted her to Salandi Hospital on Wednesday for the operation of the tumour. The operation was performed on Thursday night. However, while the operation was underway, she allegedly breathed her last.

As the news spread, family members and villagers came to the hospital and created a ruckus, alleging medical negligence as the cause of death.

On being informed, a team from Bhadrak town police station reached the spot and held discussions with the angry family members.

“When father reached the hospital, she had already been taken into the ICU. The ICU doesn’t have the required facilities. They were carrying out the operation without administering anaesthesia injection to her,” alleged Srimati Patra, the deceased’s daughter.

“When I last saw our patient, she had already died. What they were doing is only drama. At about 2.30am, they told us that our patient was no more,” rued Debasis Patra, the deceased’s relative.

While the hospital authorities have termed the allegations as baseless, the police have started a probe on the basis of the complaint lodged by the deceased's family members.
