A tragic incident in Keonjhar district of Odisha has resulted in the deaths of a woman and her young child due to electrocution, with the woman’s mother-in-law suffering severe burn injuries. The incident transpired in the Banspal block and under Nayakote police limits.
According to sources, Kalpana Mahakud, wife of Soumyaranjan Behera, was drying clothes while holding her two-and-a-half-year-old son, Rishi, when they unknowingly came in contact with a live electrical wire, leading to their immediate deaths. In a desperate attempt to save them, Kalpana's mother-in-law, Shantilata Behera, sustained severe injuries and is currently receiving medical care.
The distressing event occurred near the family's residence and was observed by neighbours. All three victims were swiftly taken to a health centre in Banspal. Upon arrival, doctors pronounced the child ‘dead’. Kalpana and Shantilata were then shifted in critical condition to Keonjhar town for further treatment.
However, Kalpana passed away while undergoing treatment at Dharanidhar Medical College and Hospital, and Shantilata remains in critical condition at the district headquarters hospital (DHH) in Keonjhar town.
No comments were received in this regard either from the local police or the family members.
Worth mentioning, earlier in another incident, an elderly woman and her son were electrocuted on the morning of April 22 at Turchi village under Madanpur Rampur police limits in Kalahandi district.
The woman was drying clothes on a wire outside her house premises. Unknowingly, she had come in contact with a live wire and received a major shock, leading to her death.
Hearing her scream, her son, aged 30 years, had rushed to her aid but tried to remove her from the spot by using his hands, causing him to get electrocuted as well. The electric shock had proved fatal, and the duo died on the spot.
