The 1990-batch IPS officer, Arun Kumar Sarangi, presently acting as the Special DG of Police, Training, and Director of Biju Patnaik State Police Academy (BPSPA), assumed the additional responsibility as the Director General of Police (DGP) in Odisha on Sunday.

Sarangi will remain in an additional charge of DGP till a regular DGP joins. He took charge from Sunil Kumar Bansal, who retired from the government service on Sunday.

After assuming the office, Saragi said, “I will emphasise on law and order, crime control and investigation, and quality policing for the people. I will pay attention that all police officials ensure quality policing for the people. I will also ensure no indifference in the policing is shown in the matter of crime control, investigation, and law and order.”

According to Sarangi, Odisha police has achieved remarkable success, especially in anti-Maoist operation, crime control and investigation. The new acting DGP also said that Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik has always extended his support and cooperation in strengthening the police force in Odisha.

“Over 5000 personnel have been recruited for various posts in the police force during the term of my predecessor Sunil Kumar Bansal. The population has increased and more police recruitment has been done. The new recruits have been imparted training. With the new manpower, the police force will be strengthened," said Sarangi

With vast experience under his belt, Sarangi was picked by the Odisha government to look after the post till a regular DGP is appointed. As the General and Assembly elections are a few months away, the new DGP is said to have a lot of challenges before him.

After assuming the office, Sarangi was given a guard of honour at the Police Headquarters in Cuttack.
