A wild tusker has been spotted roaming in the capital city of Bhubaneswar, causing panic among residents. The elephant was spotted near the cashew field close to AIIMS Bhubaneswar on Monday night.

The local residents close to the area are in a state of panic after getting information regarding the wild elephant as it has been spotted near the human settlement. There is apprehension that the wild tusker might create destruction if it enters the human settlement within the area.

The Forest Department is making efforts to guide the elephant back into the Chandaka Wildlife Sanctuary. Official sources said that efforts would be launched to drive back the elephant during evening hours.

“A woman had first spotted the elephant and later raised an alarm. We have heard that the elephant has also damaged boundary wall in the area,” said an eyewitness.

Another local resident said, “It is quite natural to fear as we usually move in the area and anything can happen if the elephant enters the human settlement.

Authorities have urged residents to remain cautious and maintain a safe distance from the animal. The Forest Department is continuously monitoring the situation and has been making public announcements through loudspeakers, advising people to stay alert and avoid unnecessary movement in the affected areas.

Past Incidents

A baby tusker was spotted near the Chandaka jungle boundary adjoining Niladri Vihar in Bhubaneswar in November 2024.

March 24, 2023: A herd of four elephants, including a tusker, two female elephants, and a calf, strayed into the Sikharchandi Hill area from the nearby Bharatpur forest. The Forest Department monitored their movements to prevent them from entering human habitats. 

June 20, 2023: Three elephants entered the Ganesh Vihar area near Sikharchandi, causing damage to property. Despite residents informing the Chandaka Forest Division, there was a delayed response due to a symbolic protest by forest staff.
