Tension ran high as locals set ablaze three cattle-laden pickup vans along Karmada-Baliapal road in Balasore on Saturday night.

As per reports, around 100 cattle were allegedly being transported to West Bengal in three pickup vans. Acting on a tip-off, local people intercepted the vehicles and informed the local police about the incident.

However, the police allegedly did not take any action against the cattle smugglers. Irate over this, the villagers later ransacked the vehicles and set them on fire after unloading the cattle. No comments from police officials could be obtained in this regard.

As per sources, cattle mafias are transporting hundreds of cattle-laden trucks from Balasore to West Bengal on a daily basis. Though general people are aware of it, police have no clue about the development.

Under the circumstances, question marks have been raised over the efficiency of the police. Locals have demanded action against illegal cattle transportation.
