Vigilance seizing the cash at Bhubaneswar’s Khandagiri sub-registrar office

A special team from the Odisha Vigilance Department arrested a junior clerk at the Khandagiri Sub-Registrar Office in Bhubaneswar after she was allegedly caught red-handed accepting a bribe of Rs 20,000 on Tuesday.

The accused junior clerk, identified as Debajani Kar, allegedly demanded the sum for processing land documents. The petitioner subsequently filed a complaint with the Vigilance Department.

As per reports, similar allegations against Kar were earlier also lodged. Consequently, the state vigilance team devised a detailed plan to trap and apprehend her.

On Tuesday, Kar demanded the bribe from the complainant, who handed over Rs 20,000 in notes marked with special ink by the vigilance team. Kar was caught red-handed, with ink stains on her hands serving as additional evidence of the crime.

Following her arrest, a thorough search of her office was conducted. Authorities discovered cash exceeding Rs 15 lakh in one of her drawers, raising further suspicions of corruption.

Kar reportedly could not provide a satisfactory explanation for the large amount of cash. The special team is now interrogating her extensively and probing a possible disproportionate assets (DA) angle in the case.

Till the last report came in, an investigation was underway and income slips, job records and bank details of Kar were being verified.
