The introduction of the Ayushman Bharat scheme, unveiled by the Union Health Minister on April 11, provides a reason for Odisha’s elderly, particularly those aged 70 and above, to rejoice. Previously not implemented by the BJD-led government, the scheme offers comprehensive free healthcare through the newly introduced 'Vaya Vandana' health card.

Eligible seniors are required to apply afresh to avail themselves of these benefits.

Health centres and Jan Seva Kendras (common service centres) are experiencing a surge as the senior citizens seek assistance to apply for the Vaya Vandana card. Initial confusion over the necessity of Aadhaar numbers, mobile numbers, and one-time passwords (OTPs) has been addressed by the staff at these centres, streamlining the process for applicants.

“This is not an ‘insurance’ scheme, but an ‘assurance’ scheme. Every individual at or above 70 years of age is eligible to get the scheme benefits,” Union Minister JP Nadda had said.

This announcement marks a historic moment in Odisha’s healthcare landscape. The Vaya Vandana health card ensures free medical treatment for those aged 70 and above. Male beneficiaries can access healthcare services valued up to Rs 5 lakh, with women entitled to Rs 5 lakh more. This development has been met with widespread joy among the elderly.

Community members like Indra Bajing from Badasagar village have been gathering at local health centres to complete their electronic Know Your Customer (e-KYC) process and to celebrate successful applications. According to health centre officials, an estimated 40 to 50 seniors apply daily for the card.

The application process begins with providing Aadhaar and mobile numbers, followed by OTP verification, e-KYC compliance, and biometric verification as well, which may involve fingerprinting, eye scanning, or facial recognition. If the biometric details match, applicants receive approval for the Vaya Vandana health card.

Applicants not possessing a mobile number linked to their Aadhaar can still complete the e-KYC process. The government estimates that about 23 lakh beneficiaries in Odisha will benefit from free healthcare services with this initiative.
