Utkal Hospital Performs First Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) for Parkinson’s Disease in Odisha’s Corporate Hospital

Utkal Hospital in Bhubaneswar has achieved a historic milestone by successfully performing Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) surgery for Parkinson’s disease, becoming the first corporate hospital in Odisha to offer this cutting-edge neurosurgical treatment. With this achievement, the hospital joins a select group of centers in India equipped to provide this advanced therapy.

What is DBS?

Deep Brain Stimulation is a state-of-the-art treatment used for neurological conditions such as Parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, Tourette syndrome, and some forms of epilepsy. The procedure involves implanting electrodes in targeted regions of the brain, which are connected to a battery-operated pulse generator placed in the chest. The device delivers continuous electrical stimulation to regulate abnormal brain activity, thereby improving symptoms.

While two DBS surgeries have been performed earlier in Odisha, the procedure at Utkal Hospital marks a major advancement — it is the first in the state to use the latest-generation directional electrodes with AI-enabled BrainSense™ technology. This innovation allows doctors to fine-tune brain stimulation with unprecedented precision, leading to better patient outcomes.

Although DBS is an advanced and relatively high-cost procedure, support is increasingly available through private insurance and government health schemes, expanding accessibility for patients.

The Patient’s Story

The landmark surgery was performed on a 40-year-old Parkinson’s patient who had been struggling with severely impaired quality of life. The surgery was completed successfully, and the patient was discharged on September 1, 2025. The implanted device will be activated after three weeks, when significant improvement in motor symptoms is expected.

The Team Behind the Breakthrough:

This milestone was achieved through the collaboration of a highly skilled multidisciplinary teamof Utkal Hospital.

Healthcare Impact in Odisha:

With Utkal Hospital bringing this advanced service to Odisha, patients can now access world-class neurosurgical care locally, reducing both cost and travel burden. Until now, patients requiring DBS had to travel to metropolitan centers for surgery

On this occasion, Utkal Hospital’s leadership congratulated the team, calling the achievement a “new chapter in Odisha’s healthcare journey, bringing hope to patients suffering from complex neurological disorders.”
