Heatwave in Odisha
Odisha is witnessing intense heat with temperatures unexpectedly climbing over 35°C in recent days. The temperature in locations across the State now reads as high as 37°C, sparking concerns among residents for the usually hotter months of May and June.
According to the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD), the unusual heat stems from a prevailing pressure system that is blocking the cool northern winds, coupled with an influx of warmer westerly winds.
Jharsuguda, a city notorious for its oppressive heat during peak summer, recorded a temperature of 37°C on Wednesday.
“If the heat is so much in February, I think how much unbearable the heat would be in March and April,” said a resident of Jharsuguda.
Meanwhile, Bhubaneswar, the state capital, commonly experiencing milder February weather, witnessed the mercury soaring to 35°C by 2 pm on Thursday.

“We have not felt so much of heat in February earlier. We are finding it very hard to beat the heat now even the summer is yet to approach,” rued a resident in Bhubaneswar.
The sweltering conditions have left streets deserted during the hottest parts of the day, disrupting daily routines as residents cope with the soaring temperatures. February has reportedly 'never been this hot before’, prompting concerns about further escalation in temperatures.
Bhubaneswar’s 35°C mark is a first for this year during February, as highlighted by the IMD. The agency attributes the heat to a pressure system situated over Odisha’s coast, which inhibits the usual northwesterly cool and dry winds.
Temperatures across Odisha have been 2 to 3 degrees warmer than normal both during the day and night, with the heat particularly impacting Odisha’s northern and interior regions.
“Mainly the wind flow from the northwest coupled with westerly winds is bringing the heat to Odisha,” said meteorologist Sanjb Dwibedi.
