Union Cabinet approves 2 semiconductor manufacturing units in Odisha

The Union Cabinet approved four new semiconductor projects in Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab, with Odisha receiving two units. Investments total Rs 4,594 crore, with Odisha's share at Rs 2,066 crore. Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw highlighted PM Modi's focus on Odisha's development.

In a big decision, the Union Cabinet on Tuesday approved as many as four new semiconductor projects across three states including Odisha, Andhra Pradesh, and Punjab. Out of these four projects, Odisha will get two semiconductor manufacturing units. Similarly, one project each will be set up in Andhra Pradesh and Punjab.

The total investment across all four projects will be Rs 4,594 crore. Odisha’s two semiconductor manifacturing units alone will attract an investment of Rs 2,066 crore.

Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw shared this information after the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday.

"Prime Minister Narendra Modi is always interested for the development of Odisha. He always intends for the establishment of new kinds of industries in Odisha. A very important decision in this regard has been taken today. Two semiconductor plants will be set up in Odisha. One among the plant will be SiCSem and the other is 3D Glass. These plants are of latest technology," said Union Minister Vaishnaw.

"As part of Prime Minister Modi's 'Purvoday' dream, it's a huge decision for the people of Odisha. In the coming days a complete ecosystem of electronic manufacturing will be set up in Odisha. Like the IT industries, electronic manufacturing industries will also come to Odisha now. With this decision, along with mineral-rich state, Odisha will now be known as electronics-rich state as well. Both the semiconductor manufacturing plants will be set up in Bhubaneswar. The Union government will have 50 per cent contribution in the budget of the plants and the Odisha government will have the contribution as per the semiconductor policy," the Minister further said.

"Silicon carbide plant products will be used in satellites, missiles, rockets, trains and telecoms. The second plat productions will be used in missiles, data centres, aeroplane and mobiles. The first plant in Odisha will have a budget of Rs 2,066 crore and the second plant will have a budget of Rs 1,943 crore," he added.
